This course is designed for those wishing to begin their mountain adventures.

Duration: 1 or 2 Days

Are you keen to begin your own adventures in the mountains? Do you want to learn how to navigate safely and competently in mountainous terrain? Then this course is for you!

Delivered in the Mourne Mountains

£90 per person per day

Ratio 1:6 student to instructor.

Course Content:

The following skills will be covered throughout the course:

  • Types of map and scales

  • Grid references

  • Orientating the map

  • 4 D’s of navigation

  • Timings

  • Basic contour interpretations

  • Measuring distances

  • Linear features (streams, paths, walls etc) and their uses in navigation

  • Hand railing techniques

  • Pros and Cons of GPS

Course Outline

This is a one or two day introductory course aimed at equipping your with the essential knowledge and theory to build your competence and confidence navigating in mountainous terrain. You’ll learn key map reading skills, use of a compass and fundamental navigation techniques while gaining plenty of practical experience in a variety of terrains and conditions.


What do I need to bring?

You will need to bring the below kit:

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers

  • Warm outdoor wear

  • Walking boots with good ankle support

  • Warm hat & gloves

  • Water bottle

  • Lunch

  • Personal medications

  • Suncream & sun hat

The following kit will be provided by Adventure Climbing Company on the day. You may bring your own if you have it:

  • Map

  • Compass

  • Emergency Group Shelter

  • First Aid Kit
