This course is designed to deepen your understanding of navigation in mountainous terrain

Are you wanting to develop your mountain navigation skills and build on your existing foundations? Do you want to start navigating on open ground and away from marked paths? Then this course is for you!
This course will aim to equip with the confidence in your abilities to navigate off the beaten track.

Ratio 1:4 student to instructor.

Course Content:
The following skills will be covered throughout the course:
Recap of types of map and scales
Recap of grid references and orientating the map
Timings
Pacing
Measuring distances
Intricate contours & ground interpretation
Features of a compass
Compass bearings
Following a bearing across open ground
Aiming off
Attack points
Catching features
Relocation techniques
Pre-requisites
Anyone with some basic navigation experience, or those wanting a refresher of skills learned previously. This course is an ideal follow-on from our Discover Navigation course.
Course Outline
A comprehensive 2-day course that seeks to advance the fundamental navigation skills and experience of the participant. All of the basic navigation skills will be covered in detail, with a focus on navigation strategies, contour interpretation and plenty of practical practice in varied mountain terrain and conditions.
